The Government has launched the “One Nation, One Subscription” scheme

The Government has introduced the “One Nation, One Subscription” initiative, which will commence on January 1, 2025. This program is designed to facilitate uninterrupted access to a diverse array of digital knowledge resources, encompassing research articles, academic journals, and scholarly content, all through a unified subscription service.
The initiative is anticipated to significantly benefit students, researchers, and educational institutions nationwide by removing the obstacles associated with multiple subscriptions and promoting equitable access to information.
Key Factors:
- Approximately 1.8 crore students enrolled in government-funded higher education institutions, including universities and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), will gain access to research articles published in prestigious international journals.
- In its initial phase, the program will provide access to over 13,400 international journals spanning various fields such as science, technology, engineering, medicine, mathematics, management, social sciences, and humanities for researchers.
- Future phases of the “One Nation, One Subscription” initiative will aim to extend access to private higher education institutions and ultimately to all individuals in the country who require such resources.
- With a budget allocation of 6,000 crore rupees over three years, the ONOS initiative represents a centrally negotiated and funded National Consortium for electronic journal subscriptions.
Additionally, it will offer central funding support of 150 crore rupees annually to assist eligible authors in publishing their work in selected high-quality Open Access journals.
