New Initiatives for India’s Maritime Sector

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has recently launched new initiatives to upgrade maritime infrastructure, boost global trade, and support sustainability, all with the goal of a developed India by 2047.

One Nation-One Port Process (ONOP): This initiative aims to standardize operations at major Indian ports. It seeks to simplify documentation and processes, cutting down container operation documents by 33% and bulk cargo documents by 29%. ONOP is essential for improving India’s competitiveness in the global trade arena.

Sagar Ankalan Logistics Port Performance Index (LPPI): The LPPI is created to enhance efficiency in India’s maritime industry. It evaluates port performance based on key factors like cargo handling and turnaround time. This index promotes transparency and fosters a culture of operational excellence, strengthening India’s role in international logistics.

Bharat Global Ports Consortium: This consortium is focused on boosting global trade by expanding India’s maritime capabilities. By working with various partners, it aims to improve port operations and financing, supporting the ‘Make in India’ initiative by increasing exports and optimizing logistics.

MAITRI Application: The MAITRI app is designed to simplify trade processes by minimizing bureaucratic obstacles. It creates a ‘Virtual Trade Corridor’ between India and the UAE to enhance trade flows. This digital tool uses AI and Blockchain technology to improve efficiency and security in trade.

India Maritime Week 2025: Set for October 27th to 31st, 2025, this event will be one of the largest maritime gatherings worldwide. It will feature the Global Maritime India Summit and aims to highlight India’s maritime history and future advancements, with participation expected from over 100 countries.

National Centre of Excellence in Green Port and Shipping (NCoEGPS): Promoting Sustainability. A new website for the National Centre of Excellence in Green Port and Shipping (NCoEGPS) has been launched to encourage sustainable practices in maritime operations. It will concentrate on reducing carbon emissions, using cleaner fuels, and managing ports in an eco-friendly way.

Vision for India’s Blue Economy: The Union Minister highlighted that India’s Blue Economy is crucial for job creation, trade, sustainability, and economic development. He reaffirmed the government’s goal to: Position India among the top 10 shipbuilding countries by 2030. Develop a world-class, efficient, and future-ready maritime system. Strengthen India’s role as a global maritime leader. These actions are designed to improve financial access, support shipbuilding, and enhance India’s competitiveness in the maritime industry.
